Jiu Jitsu Competitors. Meet James Butler, SMR EMEA Managing Director.

Connecting with people is at the core of Security Management Resources’ business, and learning what we have in common with others is the first step toward making those connections. With that in mind, we invite you to get to know a little more about the exceptional people who are behind the SMR brand in our "Common Ground" feature.

The next profile in this series is James Butler, our Managing Director for the Europe, Middle East and Africa Region. He is additionally Acting Managing Director for SMR’s Asia Pacific Region.

  • Why did you choose the security recruitment profession?

I have always enjoyed the “people aspect” of the recruitment industry. The diverse nature of the global security market meant that the breadth and depth of the security profession fascinated me from the very start. Helping to recruit bright, talented individuals who then go on to manage risk for companies operating in every imaginable sector means that no day is ever the same for me.

  • What has kept your interest in this area?

Our business changes apace. World events can trigger a restructure and change of approach for our clients. Additionally, the diverse nature of the organistions we support mean they focus on different talent streams. Factors such as these influence the product our clients expect, and we must adapt how we deliver it to them. Equally compelling is the human factor. I continually learn from my colleagues, my clients and the candidates I work with. These opportunities for professional growth make it such a personally rewarding environment to be in.

  • What is the best professional/career advice you ever got from someone?

At the start of my career I was told to be focused, be niche and take a long term approach. I have to say that this ties in with my own mantra of “manage expectations”. If I can manage people’s expectations, then everything else will fall into place.

  • What career advice relating to the security profession would you share with others?

Network intelligently and evolve. Smile, shake hands and prepare to learn.

  • How do you like to spend your free time?

I have two little girls that take up most of my free time. I am Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitor and avid “recruitment geek”. I love to learn about how the search business is evolving!

  • What are reading right now?

I am halfway through two books; which one I pick up is dependent on my mood at the time. The first one is “Blackwater: The Rise of the World’s Most Powerful Mercenary Army”, and the second is “Bounce: The Myth of Talent and the Power of Practice”. Both fascinating reads for very different reasons.
